It was not before the Asian Games in 1982 that organisation of sports event in India was taken seriously. We have thus, much to thank the Late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi for taking the initiative to organise the event in India and introducing the concept of professional management of sports in India. Since then, India has hosted international sports events like, the 1987, 1996 and 2011 Cricket World Cup, the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, the 2010 Hockey World Cup, the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the 3rd edition of the Lusofonia Games in 2014 and the South Asian Games in 2016.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a premier twenty20 cricket league held every year since 2008. The Indian Super League is a football league tournament held since 2014. Major international sporting events annually held in India include the Chennai Open in Tennis, the Indian Masters in Golf. From 2011 to 2013, India hosted the Indian Grand Prix Formula 1 race at the Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida. The National Games of India is a national domestic sports event, which has been held in the country since 1924 but since recent times, has seen professional management. In the near future India would be hosting the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, the Asian qualifier of which is presently underway in Goa.
A professional sports event, apart from generating economy in the region, also improves the State infrastructure, that is why Heads of State would sometimes do all they could, to bid for the grandeur event. These events create an ocean of opportunities for interested companies to make their way in, somewhere in being a part or playing in role in hosting of the Event.
A big segment of these opportunities is open for event companies. The hosting of Ceremonies (Launch, Opening and Closing) alone could sometimes see a group of event companies coming together to put up the spectacle, as hosting Ceremonies require specialised delivery, like projections, light, sound, artist management, scripting, choreography and so on. The others areas to explore is the victory medal presentations, conceptualising and execution of the Game’s Look and Feel, Transport and Airport management, Public relations, Marketing and promotion, spectator seating management, to name a few.
The hosts today look for more and more specialised delivery of the job, therefore we find event companies having segments within their companies, all having specialised workforce to make the pitch and deliver. One however needs to know that getting into Government run and managed events can be tedious and as the process has to be transparent, the companies are most certainly required to qualify technically and have a reasonable quote, which now need not be the lowest of all bids but however a good balance over technical. But managing Government run event can be memorable too and heavily paying.
